Where Mother Nature is your host...
Small is beautiful and so is Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
Silva, in Portuguese means Woods. And this can
be seen in Silvassa, the tiny, sleepy capital township.
Tall trees reaching for the heavens line the roads. Off the
beaten track, little cottages back in the warm sun or lie
in the shadow of trees. In Silvassa, you can see traces of
the Portuguese rule, an old church...
Tradition
While the ancient structures bear witness to the days gone
by old traditions continue to be reflected in the lives of
the people and their surroundings. As you catch glimpses of
thatched roofs and grass cutters carrying bundles of fresh
fodder, time stands still.
The world renowned Warli Paintings
adorn the humble abodes of the locals. And as you watch the
villagers perform their ancient folk dances in bright orange
striped costumes, you feel the air of anticipation as the
locals invoke the Tiger, the Lord of the Jungle. The rhythmic
tinkle of traditional jewellery combinedwith the pulsating
folk beat transport you to a lost era. in this virgin territory.
' A land lost in time '.

Lakes & Garden

waterfalls, is garden named after the local tribal
Deity 'Hirwa' Hirwavan Garden. If you are early

Lake.

Havelis
The history of Dadra and Nagar Haveli
is carved in wood and stone in the monuments from the past
that dot the land. Ancient, dilapidated ruins of vast houses
maintain an imposing silence. The intricate carvings on the
door have mysteriously remained intact, perhaps to remind
future generations of an ancient, and glorious, past.
Temples & Churches
There are several old shrines of various types in Dadra
& Nagar Haveli. Bindrabin, the historic temple at Lord
Shiva is locally known as Tadkeshwara. People from far off
places visit to pray and seek blessings.
One of the many fascinating sights you see in Dadra &
Nagar Haveli is a glorious century old chapel, the Church
of Our Lady of Piety, built way back in 1889, by the Portuguese.
This one magnificent structure, chapter in the land's history
under Portuguese rule, which began way back in 1779 when Portuguese
acquired 72 villages which comprise this territory. In this
land of peace and beauty, we find an ancient temple as well
as a Portuguese church - testimony that diverse religious
faith co-exist. In perfect harmony with nature, and with each
other.
